Academic Bowl
The Academic Bowl is a quiz bowl competition for teams of students in sixth through eighth grades enrolled in public and charter schools throughout Maricopa. During this first year 2022/2023, we are piloting the bowl through the local charter schools, with the expectation to expand it to the public middles schools for the 2023/2024 school year.
Academic Bowls have been around for decades worldwide. Bringing competition into the academic side of schools has many benefits including:
- Creates good work/study habits
- Broadening individual horizons of factual information
- Developing poise and confidence in students presenting themselves to the public
- Developing teamwork and good citizenship qualities
- Instilling an appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge
How does this work? – Each school will be allowed to enter one team of 10 students. Upon registration, teams will receive an outline of the Arizona State standards covered in the bowl for preparations. Individual schools will be responsible for ensuring their team is prepared to for the bowl.
In December, each participant will receive a practice set of questions, similar to those to be used in the bowl to gauge readiness for the event.
When is the bowl? - The academic bowl is scheduled for March 2023. The exact date will be included in the registration paperwork.
Where will the bowl take place? - Dreams Can Live has partnered with Central Arizona College Maricopa Campus to help bring this into fruition. Not only will the event take place on Campus, but the bowl questions will be administered by the professors on location.
Which subjects will be addressed? - The academic bowl will have four categories: Math, Science, Social Studies and Language. These are the categories that are covered on the AASA state assessment. Preparation for the bowl is also reinforcement and preparation for state testing.
What is the fee to register my school? - The fee for this first year is $100. This covers registration, mid-point practice questions and participation certificates and swag.
